Community awareness of violent extremism and related issues

Community awareness of the causes of violent extremism, risk factors for radicalisation and the vulnerability of certain groups to extremist influences.

Outcomes

Diversion
  • Individuals at risk of radicalisation to violent extremism are identified

To ensure individuals at risk of radicalising to violent extremism are diverted and do not engage in violence, it is necessary for the community to have both the capacity and motivation to identify and report individuals at risk. To be able to do this, the community needs to be aware of violent extremism and related issues and be willing to report suspicious behaviour and voice concerns.

Ways to measure

See the Countering Violence Extremism Evaluation Indicator Document [Pp 81-85] for practical suggestions on ways to measure such as survey instruments, example questions and using administrative data.

  • Screening tool to be used by frontline workers as a checklist of key behaviours for identifying individuals potentially at risk of becoming involved with violent extremism.
  • Adapted Grievance, Activism and Radicalism scale
  • Focus groups or interviews exploring knowledge regarding causes of violent extremism, awareness of risk factors and most vulnerable groups.
